Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture has long been the backbone of rural economies in Nigeria, providing livelihoods for millions of people. However, traditional agricultural practices have often been inefficient, limiting productivity and economic growth. Toro Local Government Area (LGA) in Bauchi State, like many other rural areas, faces challenges such as poor access to modern farming techniques, limited market opportunities, and lack of information about innovative farming practices. Digital media has the potential to address these issues by providing farmers with access to information, training, and resources that can enhance productivity and encourage innovation. According to a study by Ali and Mohammed (2024), digital platforms, including social media, mobile apps, and agricultural websites, have been successfully used to promote agricultural innovation by sharing best practices, providing market information, and offering expert advice. This study seeks to explore how digital media can serve as a tool for encouraging agricultural innovation in Toro, focusing on how digital platforms can improve farming practices, market access, and the overall livelihood of farmers.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing potential of digital media to improve agricultural practices, Toro LGA continues to face challenges related to limited adoption of innovative techniques, low access to modern farming resources, and poor information dissemination. Digital platforms are often underutilized due to low digital literacy, infrastructural constraints, and a lack of tailored agricultural content. This study aims to examine how digital media can be used to encourage agricultural innovation in Toro, and to assess its role in improving agricultural productivity and fostering the adoption of modern farming practices in the area.
